Sir John William Ramsden, 5th Baronet
of Longley and Byram
1831 to 1914
He married Lady Helen Gwendolen, the daughter of the
13th Duke of Somerset. MP for Taunton 1853/57;
Hythe 1857/59; West Riding 1859/65; and for the
Monmouthshire Boroughs from 1868 to ??
Honorary Colonel of the West Riding Volunteers;
Justice of the Peace; Deputy Lieutenant for the
West Riding and Monmouthshire; High Sheriff of
the County of York 1868. Under-Secretary of
State for War 1857/58
Sir John William restored Longley Old Hall in 1885.
He also redeveloped much of the town centre of
Huddersfield, particularly around the railway station.
